INTERIOR DESIGN

The eco chic design at MA•Velous was created by Adeeni Design Group, one of San Francisco’s most notable interior design firms and is known for its eclectic and timeless interiors.  The concept was inspired by the café’s location in San Francisco’s Civic Center and its close proximity to the arts, such as the War Memorial Opera House, the San Francisco Ballet, Davies Symphony Hall, the San Francisco Arts Commission, and the Library.  The design firm paid careful attention to implementing an eco-conscious design that is stylish and modern while celebrating the local arts by incorporating the talents of a number of local artists throughout the space.  Several of them were commissioned not only for specific artwork but also for functional designs such as the lighting, the laser-cut acrylic panels topping the partitions, the paintings on the lampshades and the photographs on the pillows in the lounge.  Our passion for coffee is reflected in the palette, which is based on the rich colors of coffee, ranging from the green fruit maturing into a golden yellow, then a bright red, and a dark espresso once the beans have been roasted.  MA•Velous has a Siphon bar, café seating including a communal table, a small library, and an intimate lounge area.  Sustainability was also important to us in the design, which was implemented in a number of ways.  The wood partitions and original tall wainscot are stained with an eco finish in a dark espresso, the library bookcase back is painted in eco lacquer, and all walls and the ceiling are treated in low VOC paint.  Eco floor tiles are installed with non-toxic grout.  Table tops are made from a single fallen California walnut tree sealed in an eco lacquer, and the faux crocodile banquettes were constructed with local wood and soy-based foam.  All of the lighting is built from found objects and discarded parts.  Vintage pieces, such as a mid-century sofa, barber chairs and a stripped All Steel credenza from a ‘40s hospital are being repurposed in new applications.  The custom benches outside are made from recycled aluminum.  Much attention was paid to creating a green design that is both approachable and chic while celebrating local creative talent.
